Tasmanian Devil Unzoo Review

After spending a day in Hobart, you can spend another day in Tasmanian Devil Unzoo. It is one of the most awesome places in Tasmania where you can interact with many animals up close! What’s more, it is only an hour drive form Hobart and 30 mins drive from Port Arthur. In this post, I’m going to write about Tasmanian Devil Unzoo Review and show you how great the place is!

Tasmanian Devil Unzoo – Beautiful Road Trip

Your little adventure will begin even before you reach your destination. It is very scenic driving along the coastline from Hobart where you will see many animals, particularly sheep. Look how adorable they are!

The sky was blue and the land was vast. Standing alone in the middle of the road, we felt that we were being embraced by earth. So when you are on your way to the park, make sure to drive slowly and enjoy the great scenery!

Tasmanian Devil Unzoo – A Little History

When you reach the conservation park, you will be greeted by the animals and the warm staff. Established in 1978, Tasmanian Devil Unzoo was formally called Tasmanian Devil Conservation Park. It is committed to the conservation of the Tasmanian devil, which is threatened by a fatal contagious cancer.  Don’t be surprised by the fact. According to the staff, just like human, devils too will get cancer. What’s worse, the disease is contagious. Just in case you don’t know, devils can only be found in Tasmania, so what the park is doing- to provide a safe zone to sustain and grow devils’ population- is really meaningful!

Devils may look adorable from far, but once you get close, you will discover that they are pretty fierce. They are carnivorous and they will devour everything they have. During the feeding time, they will howl incessantly and fight for their meat.

Tasmanian Devil Unzoo – Kangaroo Feeding

Compared to the fierce devils, I preferred spending time with kangaroos! The park allocated certain timings for visitors to feed the kangaroos. During the feedings, the staff will bring two big buckets of dry food and you are allowed to feed as much as you want. These kangaroos are very mild and they don’t mind people patting them at all, as long as you have food for them. 🙂

Tasmanian Devil Unzoo – Wallaby Feeding

Apart from Kangaroos, you can also feed wallabies. But they are much more timid compare to kangaroos. Once they feel that you are about to touch them, they will quickly run away and hide as far as they can. So if you manage to get a photo of yourself patting them, you are very lucky!

The wallabies are even afraid of the goose! Well…

Tasmanian Devil Unzoo – Amazing Bird Show

Afterwards, be sure to catch a very amusing bird show prepared by the staff, where you will learn more about different kinds of birds and their unique skills.  We managed to take photo with this handsome owl! Doesn’t it look like an owl from Harry Potter?
