Hạlong Bay, in northeast Vietnam, is known for its emerald waters and thousands of towering limestone islands topped by rainforests. Many travelers face the same question when they are considering a trip to Halong Bay: “Should I stay in Halong Bay cruise overnight?” The answer is a definite YES! There are so many reasons why you should choose Halong Bay cruise overnight. In this post, I’m going to show you why.

Halong Bay Cruise Overnight – Why should you go Halong Bay?

You’ve probably long heard about Halong Bay but may be hesitant to go. Many travelers often say “It’s dirty.” “It’s overcrowded and overrated.” “It’s expensive.” I was skeptical once just like you. But I changed my mind and decided to go ahead. I was thinking to myself “Come on! Halong Bay must have its beauty to attract so many people every year. I should just go judge it myself!” And my decision turned out to be right. It is truly beautiful and not as crowded as I expected! I don’t even think it’s dirty! It’s very well maintained in my opinion.

I engaged Tonkin Travel Vietnam for Halong Bay tour as it has good reviews on Trip Advisor. In the end I chose 2D1N Legacy Legend Cruise, which is a mid-range 3 star cruise at a very reasonable price. The price includes everything from transportation, all meals on broad, to different activities such as kayaking in Halong Bay.

Halong Bay Cruise Overnight – Where is Halong Bay?

Halong Bay is around 180km from Hanoi and it takes at least 4 hours by car to reach the pier where the cruises are located. So be prepared for a long ride! Luckily, the transportation is all taken care of once you engage cruise tours. I really like the fact that they will pick you up from your hotel near Old Quarter and drop you off at your hotel at the end of the trip! It really saves a lot of hassle for all travelers!

Why you should choose Halong Bay cruise overnight

  • You get to enjoy every beautiful moment and do Kayaking as the sun sets

In my opinion, Halong Bay is the most beautiful during sunrise and sunset moments. And you only get to see them if you stay overnight cruise. During these moments, the beauty of Halong Bay truly reveals itself.

What’s more, you get to go kayaking in the quiet and serene bay as the sun sets. The bay that our cruise stopped for us to kayak had no other cruises around. We literally had the whole bay by ourselves!

  • You can get away from crowd and explore the true beauty of Cave of Surprises

Situated in the centre of the UNESCO World Heritage area, Sung Sot or “Surprise Cave” is on Bo Hòn Island, and is one of the most spectacular and largest grottoes of Ha Long Bay. The cave is beautifully lit by different colour of lights. One of the best advantage of choosing Halong Bay cruise overnight is that you get to visit the cave during the earliest hour, as soon as it opens.

The cave is very gorgeous without crowd, which gives you ample of time to enjoy its beauty. FYI, even it’s early morning 9am, tourists from different cruises have started queuing, you can imagine how mad the crowd get in the afternoon.

  • The cruise is highly personal and intimate

Our cruise has the maximum number of 25 people on broad, which means that it’s highly personal and intimate. Our guide was very professional and knowledgeable. He was constantly sharing about the local culture and information about Halong Bay, so that we could have a more in-depth understanding. The fact that it’s a small cruise also means that it’s more cosy and provides more privacy.

  • The food is fantastic on the cruise

The cruise caters all the meals you need and light refreshment such as fruits. To be frank, I didn’t have high expectation of the food but to my surprise, everything tasted fantastic and fresh! What’s more, there’s a Vietnamese Spring Rolls making session. It is very easy to do and pretty fun making your own spring rolls!

  • The activities are fun

Apart from the awesome kayaking, you get to fish squid during night time. Although in my opinion it seems like an impossible thing to get the squid, it’s still a fun thing to do. Some travelers on-board attempted for nearly an hour! I totally admire their spirits. If you are an early riser, you can even join the morning Tachi exercise taught by one of the crew member. Lazy girl like me didn’t wake up in time, but other travelers who went for the exercise said that they enjoyed it a lot!

Check out the video below and discover how fun it is to be on the cruise!

Halong Bay has been written about a lot but this idea of an overnight cruise around it is the best way to appreciate it. Thanks!

  • Vietnam is looming large oon our list for this new year of travels. I will definatley be looking into staying overnight on a boat to catch the great sunrise and sunset for sure. And as a bonus for us it will tick off another UNESCO word heritage site.

    • I’m sure you’ll have a great time in Halong Bay and the rest of Vietnam! I personally prefer Northern and Central Vietnam, people are more friendly and the scenery is much more beautiful.

  • Thanks so much for sharing. I will keep it in mind if I travel that way. It would be so worth it to experience Halong Bay at night and with less crowded waters.

It’s very interesting to be on a cruise there as I’ve been always in land and never been on a cruise. Vietnam is a very nice country and we’ll be visiting soon. I hope we have a time to go to Halong Bay too! I want to visit the caves 😊

    • The cave is extremely when it’s less crowded. If you love caves, check out Trang An in Ninh Binh, another wonderful experience I will write about soon!
